9 tried-and-true ways to improve the appearance of your skin

As one of the first things others notice about you, the appearance of your skin can play a huge role in how you feel about yourself, as looking good often results in feeling good, too.

For anyone looking to improve the appearance and quality of their skin, this can be achieved by following certain skincare steps at home and introducing one or several professional treatments to your routine.

If you’re ready to start making changes or trying new things for a more flawless and youthful complexion, then you’ve come to the right place.

This article will discuss five simple yet effective skincare steps you should practice at home for better skin, in addition to four professional in-office treatments that will allow you to uncover a flawless complexion.

From daily antioxidants to botox injections, continue on to learn about these skin-perfecting habits and treatments below.

Skincare and skin treatments to practice at home:

1. Use a routine topical retinoid

Regular use of retinoids, such as Retin-A or tretinoin, has proven the most effective topical medical treatment for improving visible signs of skin aging, from fine lines and wrinkles to uneven pigmentation and textural issues.

Retinoids are most effective at prescription strength (compared to retinol creams that can simply be purchased over the counter).

When first starting out using topical retinoids, it is expected to experience some redness/irritation and peeling of the skin, which is why it’s essential to start at a lower strength and avoid applying daily until the skin becomes accustomed to the strength of the medication.

It’s also vital to note that retinoids should always ideally be applied at night before sleep, as retinoids cause the skin to become more sensitive to UV rays while the sunlight breaks down the efficacy of the medication.

2. Apply daily antioxidants

Antioxidants play a role in helping to reverse or prevent free radicals from causing oxidative stress, thus helping to improve signs of aging and assist in skin repair while also protecting against sun damage (photoaging). These beneficial ingredients even help to brighten and even the skin tone.

Topical antioxidants include vitamins A, C, and E and beta-carotene.

Perhaps the most commonly preferred and dermatologist-recommended antioxidant product is vitamin C serum, which should be applied in the morning prior to sunscreen and moisturizer, which we’ll cover next.

3. Absolutely never skip sunscreen

Perhaps the #1 preventive anti-aging ingredient available, a sunscreen containing a minimum of SPF 30, must always be applied in the morning to protect the skin from sun damage and premature aging.

If you’re using a chemical sunscreen, which works by absorbing into the skin, apply sunscreen before your moisturizer and makeup.

However, if you’re using a physical sunscreen (also referred to as mineral sunscreen), this should be applied after moisturizer and before makeup. You can also opt for a daily moisturizer with SPF, but be sure to select one with SPF 30 or above.

4. Use a moisturizer formulated for your skin type

Daily moisturization is a key component to any proper skincare routine, as regular hydration plays a major role in keeping the skin plump and youthful. This goes for the oiliest of skin types, too, as our skin requires optimal hydration to produce fewer oils.

Apply your facial moisturizer both in the morning and evening to help diminish the appearance of dry skin giveaways such as fine lines and wrinkles.

It’s also beneficial to use a hyaluronic acid serum or gel before moisturizing to effectively boost and lock in hydration.

5. Apply alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels

“Fruit acid” peels, commonly known as glycolic acid peels, in addition to lactic acid peels, are alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) that have the ability to gently exfoliate the skin through dissolving the bonds present between the cells in the top dermal layer.

This mild exfoliation can result in a slight improvement in the appearance of fine lines and other textural issues such as enlarged pores.

Skin treatments and procedures to schedule with a professional:

1. Schedule a deeper skin peel

A professional chemical peel is much stronger and penetrates deeper into the skin than an AHA peel you’d perform at home.

This treatment provides a deeper exfoliation that works to help rejuvenate and smooth the skin through reducing any superficial scarring, brightening areas of hyperpigmentation and evening skin tone, correcting sun damage, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles as well, as helping to clear acne.

These deeper peels use ingredients such as TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and phenol and can create a rather uncomfortable tingling sensation (beauty is pain, after all).

This is why it’s important to know what to expect ahead of time and only have these peels performed by a trained professional to avoid associated risks such as scarring or changes in skin colour.

2. Try a Hydrafacial Treatment

HydraFacial is a non-invasive skin treatment that gives your skin a bright, plump and glowing complexion.

This award-winning treatment combines invigorating spa therapies with state-of-the-art medical technology by cleansing, exfoliating, extracting and protecting the skin, all while delivering an unprecedented level of moisture and hydration.

3. Improve wrinkles with BOTOX® injections

BOTOX®, otherwise known as botulinum toxin, is a safe and incredibly popular anti-aging treatment used to successfully minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Botox injections are commonly used to treat wrinkles on the forehead, corners of the eyes (crow’s feet), and surrounding the mouth (frown lines).

During this procedure, the BOTOX® is injected via a small needle into the facial muscles requiring treatment, which works to essentially temporarily paralyze these muscles.

The result is a considerable softening of fine lines and wrinkles that will start to be noticeable around 1-3 days after treatment and can be maintained every 3-4 months or as necessary with subsequent treatments.

One of the benefits of receiving botox injections is that no recovery or downtime is required.

4. Get a “non-surgical facelift” with Forma

A non-invasive and FDA-approved skin treatment, Forma’s cutting-edge technology uses a combination of heat and radio frequency waves to noticeably tighten and tone facial skin, in addition to other areas of the body if desired.

With collagen being an essential building block for healthy skin, Forma’s radio frequency waves help to stimulate the production of more collagen below the surface of the skin, resulting in improved elasticity and leading to instant skin tightening and wrinkle-minimizing results.

Furthermore, studies have shown that exposure to heat and radio frequency waves causes an immediate contraction of collagen in addition to long-term collagen remodelling, thus helping to provide skin benefits long after a patient’s Forma treatment is performed.
